Irrational Slice: A Unique Approach to Information Visualization

Exploring New Dimensions in Information Design

Inspired by the complexities of human decision-making, designers Lu Zhao, Ruhe Zhang, and Qi Wang have created Irrational Slice, a groundbreaking information visualization project that challenges traditional design conventions. By combining three-dimensional space and augmented reality (AR) technology, this innovative design offers a new perspective on how we perceive and interact with information.

At the heart of Irrational Slice is the belief that our choices are influenced by a multitude of factors, many of which are subjective and irrational. The design team sought inspiration from the ordinary moments in life that often go unnoticed, focusing on the emotional and cognitive experiences that we all share. To highlight these moments, they chose robots as a comparison item, representing the objective and rational counterpart to human decision-making.

Using data obtained from cognitive experiments involving human-robot interactions, the designers created a 3D information visualization model and poster. This unique approach allows information to be presented in a three-dimensional space, providing a more immersive and engaging experience for the audience. By incorporating AR technology, viewers can interact with the design, zooming in, rotating, and exploring the information from multiple angles.

The aim of Irrational Slice is to redefine how we observe and interpret information in the context of digital media art. By embracing new forms of expression and enhancing interaction, the design opens up new possibilities for information design and transmission. The integration of AR technology adds a layer of depth and interactivity, enabling viewers to gain a clearer understanding of the information presented.

Creating Irrational Slice was not without its challenges. The designers had to strike a delicate balance between clear information transmission and visual aesthetics. Through numerous iterations and experiments, they ultimately decided to present the data in a three-dimensional format. This approach strengthens the connection between the viewer and the information, making the transmission more effective.

The project, which began in March 2020 in China, was completed in June 2020 and was exhibited in "The Start of a Long Journey: Outstanding Works by Graduates of 2020 from Key Arts Academics in China" at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. The design team, consisting of Lu Zhao, Ruhe Zhang, Qi Wang, and Xiaoying Li, dedicated extensive research to analyze and understand the data that formed the foundation of their creation.

Irrational Slice has received recognition for its innovative approach to information design. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With Irrational Slice, Lu Zhao, Ruhe Zhang, and Qi Wang have pushed the boundaries of information visualization, offering a fresh perspective on how we perceive and interact with data. By combining three-dimensional space and AR technology, they have created a design that not only informs but also engages and inspires.
